Celebrating Holi with the Sanskriti Society
By Charlotte Plaskwa
Marking a vibrant homage to one of the most cherished festivals in the Hindu calendar, the Sanskriti Society orchestrated an unforgettable Holi celebration on the Lower College Lawn. This year, the society went above and beyond to ensure the event was not just a celebration but a spectacular showcase of culture and joy.
As per Holi tradition, attendees revelled in the mirth of throwing colourful powders and water at each other, painting the lawn and each other with a kaleidoscope of greens, pinks, yellows and blues. The air buzzed with the electrifying sounds of a DJ blended seamlessly with the rhythmic beats of Dhol drums, creating a lively backdrop that had everyone moving to the music.
Not stopping at musical delights, the event featured a fully equipped bar, which, in a gesture that has become a signature of the Sanskriti society and their events, provided free shots to attendees. True to its inclusive spirit, the event was a warm welcome to individuals from all cultures, embodying the essence of Holi which celebrates not just the arrival of spring but also the coming together of people. It was particularly heartening to see the Indian community in St Andrews, far from home, engaging wholeheartedly in this significant festival, ensuring that its essence was not lost.
The success of the event speaks volumes of the Sanskriti society's dedication to not just preserving tradition but also fostering a sense of unity and joy among the diverse population of St Andrews. This Holi celebration broke new ground with its new location and unparalleled music and bar set up, setting a precedent for future cultural celebrations. This event was a vivid testament to the joy, colour and spirit of inclusivity that defines the festival and the society, making it a memorable experience for everyone who attended.
